Bystander Apathy: Why There isn’t Always Safety in Numbers

Our parents and grandparents have always told us that we should be careful in large cities like New York City, Chicago, or Las Vegas to name a few.  Large crowds have always been thought of as a safety net for those of us who worry about being abducted, raped, robbed, attacked, and etcetera.  We generally wouldn’t like to think that a whole bunch of people in a crowded street wouldn’t lift a finger if another fellow human being were to attack but there have been a lot of instances where people don’t react.  The reason why we don’t get the reaction from people that we think that we should is because most of us are scared.  What are we scared of exactly?  Being sewed, hurt, liable for injuries of another person, or that we might be blamed for a crime that happened.  This is called bystander apathy.

The definition for bystander apathy (or Bystander Effect) as found on the Wikipedia website is:  “a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases where individuals do not offer any means of help in an emergency situation to the victim when other people are present.”  The odds of not receiving help go up as the amount of people in a crowd increase.  Smaller amounts of people will guarantee a more likely chance of receiving help from somebody.  This of course does not make much sense to me, even after learning about it in my sociology class in college.

A couple of examples of the bystander effect will better explain this social psychological phenomenon.  These stories are not for the weak of heart of stomach.  I remember hearing about one of these in class and was very shocked.  I do have a strong stomach and nothing usually shocked me but this phenomenon really confuses me when i wrap my head around it.

The first and most classic textbook example of bystander apathy is the case of Kitty Genovese.  This information is taken from the blog of Andrew Patrick.  In 1964, Ms. Kitty Genovese was murdered and it is disputed on how many onlookers saw her but it is said that from about 12 through 38 people heard the crime taking place.  Ms. Genovese was parked across the street from her apartment when Winston Moseley attacked her.  I do not remember the details on how many times that she was stabbed and no one witnessed the stabbings.  All that people heard were screams from the street and many people turned on the lights but never became involved.  There was one claim that a man yelled outside for the guy to leave her alone.  Kitty escaped for a little amount of time and made her way into the apartment building.  The only problem was that the hallway leading to her apartment was locked.  Meanwhile her attacker came back 10 minutes later and found her in the apartment building.  He stabbed her more times, sexually assaulted her, and then left her there.  She died bleeding from the fatal wounds in the hallway of her building.  Some people  say that the details of this story are a hoax but bystander apathy is a very real thing.

Another example of bystander apathy is the story of LaShanda Callaway  who was stabbed outside of a convenience store in Wichita, Kansas by Cherish McCullough.  The people walking in and out of the convenience store watched as LaShanda struggled for life.  No more than five shoppers went by and one even stopped to take a picture with their cell phone.

These examples are quite shocking and extreme but to shed some light on what is responsible for bystander apathy.  When we think that we understand the average human being, there is something else thrown in our faces that makes things more confusing.  Remember, whenever you are out in public in a questionable part of town, bring some friends with you.  They are most likely the ones who will help if a criminal decides to strike.  We live in a country with millions of people and yet nobody seems to want to look out for another person if they are in dire need of help because we are afraid of being counted liable for something bad happening.

The focus of this article is not to make you cynical about humanity but rather to inform the reader that there is not always safety in numbers.  Unless a group of people are intimate, the probability of that person being protected goes down.

I have honestly never heard of these uses for beer. I am actually thinking of trying the grilling idea for the chicken. It looks like the result could be a nice and sweet taste. I would not recommend the idea of using beer and a raw egg as a shampoo, I have had beer in my hair before and it was not fun to wash out. If you aren’t very good at rinsing your hair out, the result may be a very sticky situation.

It Gets Better

Recently I came upon a couple of videos on YouTube that piqued my interest.  One is by somebody that I know but the others are by people who are famous like celebrities.  These videos are for anybody who is going through the hardships of being harassed because they are gay.  The videos may be made generally for that reason but their message can be applied to all people who go through hardships in their lives.  The following videos are of Jody Hirsh, John Quale (Prince Poppycock), Apple Employees, Google Employees, and Disney Employees.

The speaker in this video grew up in a time where being gay was not okay.  He speaks about not wanting to be gay.  If his secret would have gotten out during the period of Stonewall in the 1960s, he could have even lost his career.  Many choose to take their lives because they can’t deal with the bullying or pressure of being found out.  People like Jody should have existed back in the time period that he speaks of because it would have made everything a little better for everyone.

This video really meant a lot.  This guy went through a lot of the stuff that everyone else is going through today but he lived through it to tell his tale.  The one sad thing that he is talking about is all the suicides that are going on in America and around the world.  The bullying needs to be stopped so that these can end.  Gay youth and any youth in general should not feel like they are hated by everyone just because they’re different.

This one was really sad.  I could barely make it through because of the fact that the one man thought that he should end his life.  All of these people are from young to old and they had to deal with the oppression.  It’s just horrible that they felt that they’d be free from everything if they took their life.

This video is rather upsetting.  These people didn’t just picked on because of their sexuality, they were also teased based solely on being geeky while others were not able to express their gender identity.

I’m pretty sure that Disney is one of the best makers of these videos.  They play the right music at the perfect times.  Some of these people didn’t just go through mental and verbal abuse, they were subjected to physical abuse.  This kind of stuff needs to be stopped.  The behavior of the bullies is what isn’t normal.

All of these videos have the same message, “It gets better”.  Many adults and youth are oppressed every day and tend to have horrible lives because of their sexuality.  These videos aren’t just for GLBT people, it is also for anyone who has felt oppressed over the years and just wants to end it.  I was one of the people who was teased in school.  I was overweight, had long hair, and large man breasts.  People teased me mercilessly because I was different.  My friends started to kind of abandon me and tease me while other people would do the same.  I know what it is like to be different.

Ministry of the Damned

Hello to all ye people of the world.  I’m in a very indescribable mood today.  I have stumbled on an interesting website today which piqued my interests based on the fact that the writings are being published by a “pastor”.  I have gone through many of his postings and even looked at the front page of his website to find messages that would make even the most open-minded people shake their heads in disagreement and shock the masses.  I am talking about the website run by Pastor Mark Downey (Click here for Website).  Throughout this posting, I will break down what I found to be a disgusting display of hatred through his web postings.

If you have clicked the link to his website, you will notice a message that appears as the first posting on this page.  The first paragraph explains the purpose of the website.  It goes on to call a certain type of Christian to join with this ministry to worship the “one true God”.  The website looked friendly until you come to these quotes out of the text that is written in this posting.

The first sentence of this website looks friendly until you get to the quote listed below.  I find that statement to be purely racist and antisemitic.  By saying that the world is corrupted by false doctrines and Jewish fables is basically saying that the world has been fooled by false teachings and fake stories about Jews.  This guy is already starting to seem like he is off his rocker.

“The so called churches in this country, as elsewhere in the world, are corrupted with the trappings of jewish fables and false doctrines detrimental to the true Israel people of scripture; that is, the Anglo Saxon, Celtic, Scandinavian, Germanic and kindred peoples that comprise the twelve tribes, to whom the Holy Bible is exclusively about.”

If the first quote from his front page posting didn’t shock you then this second one will.  This minister is truly racist and doesn’t seem to understand that all people who are created are in every way equal (racially at least).  He says that he would like all “white” people to come and join in spreading the message of his ministry.  I’m pretty sure that right there shows that this man isn’t much better than Fred Phelps.

“Kinsman Redeemer Ministries is a calling to White people to gather together and worship the one true God; to rightly divide and discern God’s Word; to proclaim the righteousness of the Laws of God and His judgements; to live the truth, the way and the life according to God’s will.”

Pastor Mark Downey isn’t much of a good role model when having these beliefs.  I was once a Christian and was in the Methodist denomination and learned songs in Sunday school like “Jesus Loves the Little Children”, the song says that Jesus loves children who are “Yellow, Black, and White” and that they are “Precious in his sight”.  I’m pretty sure that what this Pastor is preaching isn’t teaching what is taught in multiple churches.  Here’s a little information about me.  I grew up in multiple churches, I have grown up in the United Church of Christ and was baptized in that church as a baby and the United Methodist where I attended 2 Methodist churches and learned the lessons in Sunday school.  Never did I hear anything about how “White Christians” should join together to learn the word of God.  That is pure racism right there.  This is a corrupt Pastor with a message that will get most Christians sent to hell.  Although I do not believe in the Christian ideals that are taught and believe in the old testament, there is still a message of love taught in the old testament…it isn’t all about punishing those who disobey the religious law.

After researching more into his website, I found an article called “The Truth About Lies“.  In this article he basically shows his distaste for this country and its multicultural people.  I don’t like certain things about every culture, even my own but I wouldn’t say that all people are bad based on their race.  Loud and obnoxious people come in all races, even the white race.  If you’ve ever visited Wal-Mart and have seen Bubba with Jr. with their matching mullets and love for malt liquor and the bumper sticker on their car that says “The South Will Rise Again”, then you would know what I am talking about.  Below is a quote from his article that I really enjoyed reading.

“We should pursue the truth as to when America stopped being a Christian nation with scholarship, because that will help us to identify when we stopped being a White nation.  We are no longer a White Christian nation, but rather a third world multicultural country.”

I’m pretty sure that every country has turned into a “multicultural country”.  I have done an article on here within the past week on the ministries of Westboro Baptist while criticizing it along with Pastor Fred and his daughter Shirley but even Fred fought for civil rights in the country that he says is going to hell.  I’m no fan of Freddie but Mr. Downey sounds almost as bad except he isn’t praying for more dead soldiers and thanking God for 9/11.  Still, it’s pretty close when comparing the two.

My last critique of this man’s website will go into the criticizing of the Jewish people.  Of course this one hit close to home when I read what he thought of Jews.  Just for the record, the stereotypes about us aren’t true…we’re not cheap, money laundering bastards who want to lead the nation to hell.  I’m just saying, it’s kind of wrong to condemn anyone of a different religion and hate them because of stereotypes.  That’s pretty much what led to the extermination of 6 million people who were not part of the “Aryan Race” as Hitler would call it.

Click this link to see 3 articles that show his distaste for Jews.  I’m pretty sure that calling the Jews a bunch of”filthy mongrels and referring to them as children of Cain isn’t a healthy way of thinking.  If you aren’t familiar with the story of Cain by the way, he killed his brother Abel.  The story can be found within the chapter of Genesis and the start of the story should be found in Genesis 4:1,3.  Abel was the first murder victim (sometimes referred to as the first martyr) and Cain is referred to as the first murderer (at times the root of all evil).

If you would like to input your views on this or point out if I missed anything, please comment in the box below.

Meet the Family: Westboro Baptist Edition

If we look at the world, we see many different religions and good people who are part of them.  As we look farther, there are parts of religions that have people who are just plain crazy.  There are radicals in every religion, whether they are blowing up buildings in the name of G-d or trying to say that he hates the world and that they’re the chosen ones to be G-d’s chosen ones and the rest of us are doomed.  The first group of radicals are in the middle east and parts of other countries while the second group mostly resides in America, they’re the Westboro Baptist Church.  If crazy had a picture by the definition of it in the dictionary, Fred Phelps and his daughter would be there with wide and toothy grins on their face.

Whether it is the preaching, crazy church members, or the picket signs; these people scream “crazy”.  They stand on street corners telling people who G-d hates America, Jews are doomed, gays and their “enablers”, and to pray for more dead soldiers.  That pretty much makes me think that the people who go to this church are completely nuts.  They preach that the bible is what fuels their anger and that God is pissed.

Here are some examples of their psychotic rants and antics.

First up is their newest website  Basically it is a website that gives reasons why each country in the world is doomed.  It has reasons based on their religion, what people have done, and of course if they support the gays.  There is a long article on why the United States is doomed, you’d think that if they hated this country so much that they’d get out and go somewhere else.

Here are some pictures of the Phelps and followers on the sides of street corners.

Most of those pictures kind of sickened me.  Especially the ones with the little kids.

Basically, all of the things that they do make them one of the most hated families and churches in the world.  Wishing for death, punishment to people trying to help minority groups under pressure get their voice, and saying that everything bad that happens to us is deserved is the wrong message to be delivering in a church.  Baptists are a Christian denomination which means that the new testament applies to their teachings.  If you’ve heard songs like “Jesus Loves Me” and “Jesus Loves The Little Children”, you’d know that Christians also believe in a loving God which this group doesn’t seem to get.  This group of people are not even real Christians to be honest.  I can give you tons of examples in the new testament that display the message that we should all love one another.

God’s Love Scriptures

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Romans 5:8 “…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 8:37-39  “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

1 John 3:1  “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

What Did Jesus Say About Love

Matthew 5:43-48  You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 6:24-25  ”No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.  “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Mark 12:28-30   And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

John 14:21-24  Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”  Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” Jesus answered him,  “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

John 15:9-17 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

I think that we get the message that the teachings that Christians abide by basically tell them to love one another.  The golden rule even says that you should do unto others as you would want done to yourself.  Karma is karma and the Westboro Baptist church will have a nice toasty space in Hell next to Satan for their actions toward humanity.

Remember, there are many different types of crazies in this world but the Phelps tend to be at the #1 spot most of the time.

Mac or Windows?

There always seems to be an ongoing battle between people about what operating system is better; Mac or Windows.  When searching through websites, I always seem to find people who disagree with each other for some particular reason over which computer is better for things.  The differences between a Mac & Windows are very present and for every user, there are features that they want but can not have with one that the other has.  After doing some research, I have found the pros and cons of both systems.

Let’s start with Windows…

Backwards Compatibility –

Okay, let’s say that you are having trouble with your current windows software and would like to upgrade to a newer version of the software but are afraid to do so because you’re not sure if your current programs will be compatible with the newer version.  Chances are that you will be able to use the programs with the newer software version because programs designed for the Windows operating systems are usually compatible with the new software.

Good for Gaming –

If you’re a gamer and love to spend hours every Friday night while other people have something to do playing video games, then this is your lucky day!  There is a large assortment of game titles designed for Windows.  For gaming purposes, this seems to be a good software, I haven’t had much problems on my computer so far…

Software Compatibility –

If you pay attention to computer programs and the world of technology in general, you’ll know that Microsoft is out there…everywhere.  Wherever you go, there seems to be a new program out for a laptop or desktop and there is usually a Windows compatibility sign on one of those programs.  Basically, if you see it, Windows is compatible.

Ease of Use –

Most users of Windows never have too much trouble when trying to learn how to use the software.  The programs, look, and feel of the software have something about them that make using a laptop or computer much easier.  Windows puts a lot of thought into its menu styles, program locations, and user-friendly features.  I love my Windows 7 layout, it was the easiest thing to use and showed me what to do when I got on it.

Virus, Malware, & Spyware –

With this operating system, there is a large downside.  Whether it is from the wide availability of Windows computers or the fact that the software is easy to hack, Windows is a breeding ground for threats to your computer.  Users are always reporting issues with their computer and unless you get a great virus protection…you’re screwed.

Support Needed –

I’m pretty great with setting up my computer and rarely have any problems because I know what to do most of the time and have friends who are IT specialists. There are a lot of problems that arise when using a Windows computer and you’ll need all the help that you can get when trying to run this operating system without a basic knowledge of computers.  Whether the problem is a virus or the computer is not running properly, help is needed.

Poor Security –

I already mentioned the problems with threats and this one goes hand in hand with them.  Windows has poor protection for the system and you are bound to get Viruses, Malware, or Spyware on your computer because the system is so easy to hack.  The wide availability of the software makes it easily hackable because everyone has it.  Windows does not seem to do anything about this problem or they do not have the know how to do anything.

The last problem is plain and simple, it doesn’t require any explanation as well.  When you get a Windows computer, you’re limiting yourself to what you can download, there’s a vast array of open-source software out there and you’re pretty limited to what can be downloaded on a Windows computer.

*These are not all the problems but some of the main ones that present themselves to the users of Windows OS.

Next, we have the MacOS from Apple.  It’s a pretty sound system and has a lot of users but there are some cons to this system as well as many pros.

Ease of Use –

If you have trouble using software on computers, Mac is definitely a good choice.  For those who have no idea what they are doing past pressing the on button, you’re in luck because Mac is so easy to use.  I have had a better time messing with a Mac than my Windows computer.

Security –

This software is much safer to use than Windows because of its Unix base.  There is less of a threat to your laptop or desktop computer with this software.

More Choices –

There is a vast open-source library of programs just ready to be used and MacOS allows you to access that large list.

More Stable –

Mac is a more stable operating system because Apple has more control over its configurations making the system much more sound, along with that, the Unix base is something to boast about.

Price –

Out of every operating system, Mac is the most expensive.

Harder to Customize –

If you own a Mac, then you will know that this computer is a little difficult to customize to your liking.

Harder to Find Inexpensive Parts –

Everyone that I know loves their Mac.  I have never heard about any complaints, except for when one of the parts break.  The parts for a Mac are incredibly expensive to replace and if you have something like a chord, it won’t have a replacement unless it is from Apple.  There is no third-party developer handing out MagSafe chords (amazing product) so you’re stuck with Apple’s prices.

*These are not all of the Cons of a Mac but there aren’t many more, just listing main problems.

As you can see, Mac seems to take the cake for the better software.  I have my Windows laptop and kind of want to throw it out the window at times and buy a new Mac laptop (if they weren’t so expensive I would).  I use my friend’s whenever I can and he has never had an issue with it and neither have I.  I’ve had to bring up pages on Facebook and Twitter which usually slow a computer down a considerable amount but he uses his computer to go to those sites regularly and I had no difficulty using my Twitter account after using Facebook multiple times.  I would say that you should buy a Mac, they cost extra but they’re worth it and there aren’t so many risks of viruses or many threats to your computer.
